Louisville, KY -- The inaugural CanAm Sport Horse Classic took place
at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, Kentucky, in conjunction with the
Hagyard Midsouth Three Day Event ( CCI*) , October 19 - 21, 2007. The
CanAm Sport Horse Classic is an event consisting of three components;
Showcase, Sale and Futurity.
The Showcase was designed to present CanAm Sport Horse weanlings before
the American horse public. Previews involving a parade of the weanlings,
complete with color commentary about each one, were scheduled throughout
the two days. Color commentator for the event was Connie Dorsch, Dorsch
Farms, Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. Spectators praised the weanlings for
their behavior and the handlers for their fitting.
The Sale was conducted in conjunction with the event using a modified
silent auction format. A bid board was utilized to collect bids throughout
the two days with the final closing taking place at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday,
October 20, 2007. The final closing gave buyers a last minute opportunity
to raise their bid or place additional bids as weanlings were presented at
the final closing. High Seller was Suzie Q, a filly consigned by
Ravine Ranch, Doug & Deb King, Lenore, Manitoba, Canada. The gray filly
was sired by Samual, a registered Havoverian stallion sired by the
show jumper Simply SM. Dorsch Farms, Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada
was the successful bidder at $3,300.
As an added incentive, weanlings purchased in the Saturday sale were
invited back to compete in the $3,500 Futurity on Sunday. The Futurity
took place at 11:00 a.m and was judged by Dietrich Felgendreher, Holly Oak
Farm, Midway, Kentucky, and Lori Hoos, Wil-lo Blue Farm, Franklin,
Tennessee. Dietrich maintains a warmblood breeding and dressage operation
and is a member of the inspection committee for the International
Sporthorse Registry. Lori is a USDF "L" judge and an active foxhunter with
the Hillsobro Hounds.
The $3,500 Futurity was won by Skye purchased in the auction by
Cynthia Kulczycki, Dugald, Manitoba, Canada and exhibited by Deb King,
Ravine Ranch Sport Horses, Lenore, Manitoba, Canada. For the win, Cindy
received $1,500 and a trophy cooler. Skye is sired by the
Hanoverian stallion Samual and out of the Thoroughbred-Percheron
crossbred mare Lenore.
On the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the CanAm Sport
Horse breeding program in Canada a special presentation was made to Edward
"Ned" Bonnie, Louisville, Kentucky. Ned has been instrumental in the
development of the CanAm Sport Horse program as an advisor, promoter and
marketer.
The "Peoples Choice Award" was presented to Murray & Linda McCaskill,
Dead Lake Ranch, Gladstone, Manitoba, Canada consignor of Whata Boy.
The flashy brown paint colt had markings in all the right places and a
people personality made him an easy choice.
